Maenchen Residence
10 Greenwood Common: Maenchen Residence, 1953
Architect: John Funk
Landscape Architect: Lawrence Halprin
With its graceful “butterfly” roofline spreading up and outwards from the center of an airy house of glass and wood, only the Maenchen House faced the small open space originally proposed as the Common. The “bi-nuclear plan” placed two wings against an entry gallery, with the private rooms to the east and the public rooms to the west. The voids between the wings were planned as an entry garden and an enclosed courtyard. It is possible to see the Golden Gate from the study in the east wing, testifying to Funk’s skill in handling the large glass areas and shading necessary to maintain a transparency through the garden and living room.
Halprin designed both the entrance and the courtyard gardens. A few years later, Halprin designed a Japanese inspired pool.
